What is the difference between trying and being determined?
If we look up the word “try” in the dictionary, we find that it means to perform an action with the intention of achieving something, even without the certainty that it will be accomplished. In other words, trying reflects a lack of confidence in reaching the goal.
Determination, however, is very different from trying. It is defined as firmness and consistency in pursuing a goal, maintaining effort and the decision to move forward despite obstacles or difficulties. This difference is not just theoretical; it also shows in the way we seek God.
In our faith (trust) in God, many people confuse these two concepts. In fact, when they seek God, they do it by trying, when they should seek Him with intention and confidence.
The Bible teaches more about this, saying:“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.” (Hebrews 11:6)
When we speak of faith, we speak of trust. And without this trust in God, it is as if we have no relationship with Him. For example, in a relationship with someone, we don’t fully commit unless there is trust. Trust (faith) is the foundation of every true relationship—especially our relationship with God.
What kind of trust is necessary when we seek God’s help and guidance?
“Because anyone who comes to God must believe that He exists…”
It’s not about works, knowledge, or traditions, because anyone can do those out of routine. The first step is to trust and believe that God is real. After all, how can you ask something from someone if you don’t believe not only in their ability, but in their existence? If we don’t hold the conviction that God is real, then when we seek Him, we do it only superficially—not with genuine faith.
That is why, before praying or asking God for anything, we must acknowledge that He exists and that He has authority over our lives.
What happens when we acknowledge Him this way?
“…and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.”
When we acknowledge God and seek Him sincerely, He rewards us—not just with material blessings, but with peace, purpose, and eternal life. That is why our search for Him must be constant and wholehearted—with determination—trusting that God never leaves without an answer the one who seeks Him sincerely.
You may be facing problems or situations right now that others don’t understand, but God does. And this is why He calls us to trust in Him to receive freedom. If there is one lesson we learn from this teaching, it is this: We should not try—we must be determined. Because when God sees our firmness of faith, He is able to help us in every area of our lives.
May God bless us all.
