Why are there situations in life that a person is unable to overcome?
We are in that time when the year is coming to an end, and many hope that the new year will bring new and different things. But how many times have people said the same thing and nothing changes? The same hopes from last year repeat themselves, but nothing happens.
After some time passes, and a person—frustrated because nothing has changed—looks up to heaven and asks God:
“Why don’t You answer my prayers? Where is Your love? Where is Your grace? Where is Your mercy?”
But many forget an important detail: God’s love is not a feeling; it is justice.
God’s justice restores. It is faithful, responsible, and true. However, many do not recognize it because they are accustomed to living in unfaithfulness.
For example, in the relationship between a husband and his wife: when a person is married, they know they should not become involved with others and that they must be faithful to their spouse. Yet today, many see infidelity as something normal, as if it were something that is simply bound to happen.
But that is not love. Betrayal is not faithfulness, nor is it true or responsible.
That is why the Bible teaches us:
“And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1).
Here, the verse highlights three key details: the condition a person is in without God, and what that condition is filled with. “Trespasses” and “sins” are two different words: one refers to the moral law, to human wrongdoing, and the other to the spiritual realm.
The condition of being “dead” means being distant—or in other words, not having a relationship with Him.
But perhaps you may say, the verse mentions that God gave us life. Yes, He gave life, but many do not come out of their trespasses, sins, or that condition of death because they are unbelieving.
Being unbelieving does not mean not believing. There are many who believe, yet are still unbelieving. The point here is that they do not give credit.
And how is credit given?
Credit is given through obedience.
But why is it difficult for many to obey or to give credit?
The Bible says:
“You let the world—which doesn’t know the first thing about living—tell you how to live. You filled your lungs with polluted unbelief and then exhaled disobedience. We all did it; all of us doing what we felt like doing, when we felt like doing it. We were all in the same boat” (Ephesians 2:3–4).
Many allow the world to deceive them because they do not know Christ Jesus or what He did for us. Here we see that when we fill ourselves with unbelief, we first become contaminated, and the result is disobedience. But this does not happen only because the world influences us; it also happens because we allow the flesh to rule us.
We must remember that when a person does not have a relationship with Him, it is very easy to be influenced by what is evil. The worst part is that this happens subtly: it attacks us through our own desires and leaves us stuck. No one is excluded from this. No one is exempt from human trespasses, human impulses, or the sins committed along the way.
That is why it is so important to draw near to God and develop a true communion with Him.
Now reflect: if He took us—or can take us—out of the condition of death and give us life, what is holding us back?
“He took our dead lives because of sin and gave us life in Christ” (Ephesians 2:5).
Christ helps us win the battle, but it is we who must build that relationship and live in obedience.
